Couple Builds Awesome Off Grid Container Home

When it comes to building an off grid home or cabin, you have a few different options. There is always just hiring a traditional builder, of course, but there are also prefabricated options, tiny homes, log cabins, and even less traditional options such as the use of shipping containers. That last one, shipping containers, has seen a pretty big increase in popularity over the recent years, in part because they are often a more affordable option, and you can get more than one and combine them for an even bigger living space. You can pretty easily find examples on the internet to help give you ideas of what you might be able to do with your own build.

Life Uncontained Container home

One interesting build was found recently on the “Life Uncontained” YouTube channel. This couple built their dream home using two shipping containers, elevated off the ground using concrete pylons/pillars, and they made it entirely off grid ready. They chose to go with a design where the two containers were not directly connected, but rather offset both length, and width wise. They removed one side of each container, while also installing them on the pylons so that one side would be slightly shorter compared to the other side, with a gap in the middle that they connected with sturdy floor joists, to provide them with quite a bit of extra living space. Not only that, but they did all the work themselves, which was likely a huge money saver and allowed them to build it exactly the way they wanted it to be built.

They did a very thorough job, making sure to properly install and seal the windows and doors, while framing out the flooring, walls, and adding insulation, plumbing, and electrical. This isn’t a cutting corners build in the least, and it really looks amazing when you see the finished product, especially from where it all started. They installed several solar panels to be able to power the home properly, and they added 3 large water storage tanks to their property to meet their needs. The final product has both a bit of industrial look due to not hiding the original storage container doors (though, they did get a fresh coat of paint instead of the original, rough, green), and also a more modern aesthetic with the center portion being raised, and the two sides being slightly offset.
