NO! You don't need to live like a caveman to live off grid.
Don't listen to the purist trolls. They are conflating and confusing their own personal opinion with the facts and pushing their own personal preferences on everyone else.
Some folks have a deeply fundamental misunderstanding of what "off grid" means. This is mostly because when they first enter the off grid niche they are looking for info and usually the first ones to chime in and start offering up their opinions are the purists who think there's only one way of doing things and if you don't do things that way then you're not "truly off grid."
In reality ALL OF THESE PURISTS ARE 100% ABSOLUTELY FACTUALLY WRONG!
Off grid does NOT mean living like a caveman. It doesn't mean "roughing it," and it damn sure doesn't mean giving up technology, the internet, your phone, or modern conveniences.
You don't need to give up running water, hot water, electricity, heating and air conditioning, appliances, or anything like that.
Off grid living doesn't mean living primitively.
You can still have everything you have now and more and still be off grid. Off grid only means you are disconnected from the municipal power grid. Hence "off grid."
Here's what it actually takes
You can have everything every normal suburban house has now, you just produce your own power, water, and run everything off grid on solar, wind, and your battery backup energy storage.
You only need 30kwh per day to live like most suburban homes. That means:
- A 5kw solar system
- A 1kw wind turbine
- A 40kwh battery system
- A propane generator and a 100 gallon propane tank to top off your batteries in low light, cloudy, and inclement weather
Prices for this whole system range on the low side from about $15k to about $30k depending on brand, quality, and manufacturers. That's all you need. Average for this is about a $25k investment and you're off grid permanently.
You won't be using the propane because you'll have more than enough energy to run everything you could possibly want to run with your off grid system. The propane is for emergencies and to run the generator if your solar power system fails for some reason, or you're doing maintenance.
There is absolutely zero need to live primitively unless that is your personal preference.
NEVER EVER LISTEN TO ANY PURISTS tell you any different.
Live it your way
If you want to live primitive, that's fine. Do it. For YOU.
What you don't get to do is go around telling people they're "not off grid because you're online" or "you're not off grid if you use technology" (they're literally too f*cking stupid to realize they're using technology to whine about you using technology. No one ever accused the trolls of being smart.
The purists and ignorant n00bs are the ones running around telling people they're doing it wrong.
Our community isn't here for purist gatekeepers and uninformed morons that never lived off grid in their lives yelling at everyone who doesn't live like them. Those who try it will be banned immediately and permanently. No warnings. No appeals. No exceptions.
There are as many ways to live off grid as there are humans on earth, and every one of them is valid if it keeps you safe, happy, and free.
For some, it's solar panels and wind turbines and battery backups. For others, it's raising livestock and growing their own food and living in a cave. It's perfectly fine to live off grid in a cave, but just because you do doesn't mean everyone else should too.
If they want to live primitively let them, just don't take what they say as gospel. It's just their opinion, and their opinion doesn't matter if they're telling you there's only one way to live off grid.
And yes, for plenty of people, off grid includes smartphones, laptops, WiFi, hot showers, Netflix and chill.
Modern comfort and technological necessity doesn't cancel out independence and freedom. The two are not mutually exclusive.
If you like technology use technology. If you like hot water, use hot water. If you want electricity use electricity.
Same for air conditioning and appliances and washing machines and microwave and your big screen TV.
This is the 21st century. Technology is a part of our lives. It's how things work. Makes life much easier and there's absolutely no need to forego using technology unless you absolutely want to.
You can be 500 miles from anywhere and still have electricity, internet hot water and air conditioning.
And F*** anyne who tells you you can't!

One person might thrive with nothing but a tent and a fire pit. Another might build a self-sustaining smart home with a home theater. Both count. Both are right.
This isn't a pissing contest. We're not here to crown who's "more authentic."
If you're cutting ties with the grid and taking control of your life, you're doing it right. Period.
So here's the bottom line: Off grid living isn't one-size-fits-all.
There's no right way. There's no wrong way.
If you get that, welcome. If you don't, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Live your off grid life how you see fit.
